Starting Fresh: How Generative AI Can Help Administrators Kick Off the New Year

He had me at ChatGPT.  It’s been almost two years now, since my husband introduced me to generative AI.  I think as a new Assistant Principal, he was willing to share anything with me that would help alleviate some of the stress and overwhelm I felt.  Little did I know that what he shared with me would indeed be a game changer in my new role.  He knew I was tech-savvy as I had served as a digital learning coach for eight years and a district administrator who supported technology integration for three years, but when he showed me how ChatGPT could help me build professional development plans to support the teachers at my campus, I was a believer. (Check out the screencast below for a few ways to use ChatGPT. Likewise, it is my goal for this new blog to inspire and empower you to leverage the power of generative AI to assist you in the many tasks filling your plate as an administrator.  The new year is an ideal time to consider ways to streamline our tasks and increase our efficiency and productivity. In this first post, I want to share with you some of the ways I have used generative AI to help me in my role: 

• Develop professional learning plans and sessions for teachers aligned to our campus goals

• Draft communication templates that I use when communicating with parents

• Compile a playbook to assist our teachers in planning field trips and interdisciplinary lessons

• Create checklists for tasks that must be done when addressing discipline

• Establish restorative practices and reflection activities for students when they have been called to my office

• Develop systems for planning, monitoring and evaluating programs I lead at my campus

Most importantly, generative AI has been instrumental in serving as a virtual assistant by saving me time and allowing me to focus on the tasks that only I can do (what AI cannot do).  It is available around the clock, which is necessary since I find myself working around the clock.  I have discovered even more generative AI tools beyond ChatGPT like: MagicSchool AI, Perplexity, Google Gemini, School AI, and more.
